Literacy Volunteers of Washington County to Host
Lace Up for Literacy Fundraiser

Friday, May 15–Sunday, May 31, 2020

Your walk, your pace, your time, your place

WESTERLY, RI—In these uncertain times of social distancing, community matters more than ever. Literacy Volunteers of Washington County is providing a way to strengthen the ties in our community while supporting adult literacy in a fun and healthy way.

Lace Up for Literacy is a walking fundraiser that encourages the community to head outside and get exercise while supporting the work of Literacy Volunteers. This event will take place from May 15 to May 31, 2020, and will follow all government requirements on social distancing.

Participants can register at literacywashingtoncounty.org. There they will set a goal for the number of miles they will walk in the two-week period and pledge an amount for each mile walked—for example, $2.50/mile x 10 miles = $25. Participants can also donate a set amount for their walk and encourage others to sponsor them as well.

During this pandemic, Literacy Volunteers continues to provide one-on-one tutoring, conversation classes and individual study plans for adult English language learners via online media. Many of these students are young parents who are schooling their own children at the same time.

“It’s great to see the faces of our students light up as they connect with one another online and keep practicing their English language skills,” said Mary Carol Kendzia, executive director of Literacy Volunteers.

Walkers and sponsors can connect with other walkers through social media by using the hashtag #LaceUpLVWC or by posting their photos on the Literacy Volunteers of Washington County Facebook page. Family and friends can also participate, wherever they are—from grandmothers in California to friends in Florida. It’s a great way to stay connected and engaged while supporting a good cause.

The first 50 people to register for Lace Up for Literacy will receive a free one-month membership from Libro.fm, which includes one free audiobook and will support Savoy Bookstore, one of our sponsors. For more information, please visit literacywashingtoncounty.org or email lvwcexedir@gmail.com.
