Joyce S. Ahern Speaker Series
The Joyce S. Ahern Speaker Series is an annual event during which an author or speaker offers a presentation followed by a reception and book signing at the Ocean House.
Joyce S. Ahern brought her considerable experience as a mother of five and dedicated elementary school teacher to Literacy Volunteers. A long-term board member, Joyce spent many years helping people learn to read. She had a single-mindedness when she was onto something, and Literacy Volunteers was a direct beneficiary of her persistence.
Joyce was passionate about Literacy Volunteers. She could always be counted on for her strong and immediate focus, her willingness to raise funds and work long hours. She also had an uncanny ability to recruit volunteers. Her children were not exempt from her passion and reading time was always a priority in her family's home. This series is named in her honor.
Links for Literacy Charity Golf Tournament
Every spring, Literacy Volunteers hosts a nine-hole golf tournament at Weekapaug Golf Club. The event also features lunch and raffles.
International Potluck & Awards Ceremony
At the end of every every school year, Literacy Volunteers hosts a International Potluck & Awards Ceremony for the students, tutors and their families.
Layng Martine, Jr.
Another notable event this summer was the debut of Layng Martine, Jr.’s book, “Permission to Fly.” Layng very generously donated the proceeds from his author events at the Savoy Bookstore and the Ocean House to Literacy Volunteers in memory of Bob Richins, a great friend of Layng's. Bob, who passed away in 2016, was one of the early and always enthusiastic supporters of LVWC, a passion that the Richins family continues to keep alive.
