ESL & ABE Resources

Breaking News English provides free lessons for ESL and EFL students wanting to learn English through news articles. Lessons contain reading, listening, and grammar activities. Two new lessons are added every week based on news stories from around the world. Each news article contains a 2 page mini lesson or full 27 page lesson (with 40 exercises).

Engoo Daily News is a free service for English learners provided by Engoo. New articles are added every day, covering a range of topics for intermediate and advanced readers.

This site also provides lesson materials for conversation, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading, and speaking for beginner to advanced English learners.

ESOL Courses is a free online teaching and learning platform. They publish free online self-study lessons for English students and resources for English language teachers/tutors. This site provides lessons for listening, grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing. Keep in mind that this site is from the United Kingdom, and some spellings in the courses may be British spellings.

Mango Languages is an online language learning service that offers 16 English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. It uses a conversational and intuitive approach, focusing on real-life situations and cultural context, with features like voice analysis for pronunciation and a personalized review system. The service is accessible via web and mobile apps and is often available through library subscriptions.

Daily ESL is designed to help you become familiar with common vocabulary and expressions you can use all the time in many situations. Choose a topic, listen, answer questions, read along with paragraph, and then discuss the questions with a partner or tutor.

Khan Academy provides free online learning resources for anyone, anywhere, primarily aimed at students from kindergarten through early college and adults brushing up on fundamentals. Originally a great resource for math and science, Khan Academy also has English language arts lessons, too.
